Is Dental Fear Real?

We know that dental anxiety or phobia is real as those unknown and noisy tools can be scary. Most people avoid visiting a dentist out of their fear of what may happen. Patients with anxiety may still manage to visit their dentist, but for those with a phobia, it’s harder.

Reasons for Your Fear

If you are trying hard to get rid of your dental fear, you need to identify the reason behind your fear. There are several reasons why people are afraid of visiting a dentist. Here are a few common reasons.

Afraid of Needles

Usually, Novocain, a numbing agent, is used to make your dental procedure more comfortable. But it is delivered with a needle that can be slightly uncomfortable. If it still causes you some discomfort, you should ask for more Novocain. It will surely require another pinch of the needle but it is worth it as the procedure will be a lot easier.

Fear of Certain Sounds and Smells

Some people might be simply afraid of the sound of the drill or the burning smell from it. If they had any bad experiences in their previous visits, then they will recall those bad moments. It will cause them the fear of a repeated instance.

Visiting a Dentist Itself

Some people are afraid of a dentist. It may sound silly but their fear is real. The reason may be some bad experience that they had as a kid. And dentists are humans and aren’t perfect. However, you can choose the right dentist whom you already know or are comfortable with.

How to Overcome Dental Fear

Identify the Reason

Identify the specific reason behind your fear and try to find a solution. No matter what your reason is, there will be a solution for that.

Visit a Family Dentist

If you visit a family dentist whom you trust, you will definitely feel more comfortable.

Talk to Your Dentist

Before starting the procedure, it’s better to talk to your dentist about how you feel. They must have dealt with many such patients.

Practice Meditation

You can practice breathing techniques or some regular mediation before the appointment. It will make you feel relaxed.

On your visit, you can bring someone who can help you with your anxiety or fear.
